One-Day Rewire Plastering and Making Good: What the Finish Looks Like
The most common concern homeowners have about a rewire is not the electrical work — it is the mess. They have heard stories about houses left with open chases in walls, holes where back boxes were cut in, plaster dust coating every surface, and weeks of follow-up work from a separate plasterer. Some homeowners delay a rewire for years because they dread the disruption to their home.

This guide explains exactly what the plastering and making good process involves, what your walls will look like at handover, and what you need to do afterwards.
Why Traditional Rewires Leave a Mess
In a traditional rewire, a single electrician works room by room over seven to ten days. They chase channels into walls for cables, cut holes for back boxes, and run cables through the property. The plastering happens after all the electrical work is finished — often by a separate tradesperson booked for the following week.
This creates two problems:
1. Open chases and holes for days or weeks: Your walls have channels and holes in them for the entire duration of the electrical work plus the waiting time for the plasterer 2. Dust accumulation: Every chase cut into a wall generates dust. Over ten days of chasing, the dust gets into every room, every surface, every piece of furniture
With a one-day rewire, the chasing happens in the morning and the plastering starts at lunchtime. The chases are open for hours, not weeks.
What Gets Chased and Why
Not every cable route requires a chase in the wall. Many cables run through concealed routes — inside wall cavities, under floors, through the loft space — that require no visible cutting into walls. Chases are only needed where:
Cables Drop to Sockets and Switches
A cable running through the loft to a bedroom light switch needs to drop down through the wall to the switch position. If the wall is a cavity wall, the cable drops through the cavity with no visible disruption. If the wall is solid (common on external walls and in older Manchester properties), a vertical chase is cut from ceiling level to the switch position.
Cables Run Horizontally to Back Boxes
Where a socket or switch is not directly below a vertical cable route, a short horizontal chase may be needed. BS 7671 requires horizontal chases to run only within 150 mm of the ceiling or floor, so they are typically hidden behind skirting boards or covered by coving.
New Socket Positions
If you are adding sockets where none existed before, the back box is cut into the wall and a cable chase runs to the nearest distribution point.
Cable Crosses Between Rooms
Where a cable needs to cross from one room to another through an internal solid wall, a small hole is drilled through the wall. These penetrations are filled and sealed by the plasterer.
The Plastering Process
Our Plasterer Starts at Midday
Our plasterer arrives with the team at 7 AM but begins active work around 11 AM to midday, once the first chases have been cut and cables installed. This staggered start means the plasterer is working on areas the electricians have already completed while the electricians continue in other rooms.
Step 1: Chase Filling
Cable chases are filled using:
- Bonding coat: For deep chases (over 6 mm), a bonding coat of plaster is applied first. This is a coarse base layer that fills the depth of the chase and provides a key for the finishing coat.
- Multi-finish skim: Once the bonding coat has firmed up (typically 30 to 60 minutes), a thin skim of multi-finish plaster is applied over the top. This is feathered out to blend seamlessly with the surrounding wall surface.
Step 2: Back Box Patching
Where back boxes are cut into walls, the gap between the back box edge and the surrounding plaster is filled and skimmed. A neat, clean edge around each socket and switch is the mark of a quality finish.
Step 3: Penetration Filling
Holes drilled through walls for cable crossings are filled with fire-rated filler (in fire-separated walls, such as party walls or between floors) or standard filler for internal partitions. The surface is then skimmed flush.
Step 4: General Making Good
Any areas where plaster was damaged during strip-out or cable installation are repaired. This includes:
- Patches where old back boxes were removed and not reused
- Areas where plaster cracked during chasing
- Nail holes from removed cable clips
- Any accidental damage during the work
What Your Walls Look Like at Handover
Immediately After
At handover (typically 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM), the plastered areas will be:
- Smooth and flush with the surrounding wall surface
- Slightly damp — freshly applied plaster takes 24 to 48 hours to dry fully
- Slightly different in colour — wet plaster is darker than the surrounding dry wall. As it dries, it lightens to a uniform pale pink or white
After 24 to 48 Hours
Once the plaster has dried:
- The colour difference between new and old plaster is minimal but may still be visible in some lights
- The surface is smooth and ready for painting
- The chase lines are flush with the wall — you should not be able to feel them when you run your hand over the surface
After Painting
Once painted, the repaired areas are invisible. A single coat of paint over the chased areas blends them completely with the surrounding wall. For previously painted walls, a mist coat (diluted emulsion) on the new plaster followed by a full coat is recommended.

We Do Not Redecorate
Our service includes plastering and making good — bringing the walls back to a smooth, paintable surface. We do not paint, wallpaper, or decorate. The property is left ready for you to decorate at your convenience.
We Do Not Replace Coving or Dado Rails
If your property has coving (ceiling moulding) or dado rails, we remove them carefully where cable routes pass behind them. We refit coving where possible, but damaged sections may need replacing. We will tell you at the survey stage if coving removal is likely.
We Do Not Plaster Entire Walls
We repair the specific areas affected by the rewire — chases, back box cut-outs, penetrations, and any areas damaged during the work. We do not re-skim entire walls or ceilings unless separately agreed and quoted.
Quality Standards
Flush Finish
Every chase repair is finished flush with the surrounding wall. If you run a straight edge across the repaired area, it should be flat. Raised or sunken patches indicate poor plastering and are not acceptable.
Clean Edges
Around every socket and switch, the plaster edge is clean and square. There should be no gaps between the plaster and the faceplate, and no plaster overlapping onto the accessory.
No Visible Cable Routes
Once painted, you should not be able to identify where cables were run by looking at the walls. The chases should be completely invisible. If you can see or feel the chase line after painting, contact us and we will rectify it under our guarantee.
Dust Control
Our team uses dust sheets on every floor and covers furniture. We vacuum and sweep at the end of the day. Plaster dust is inevitable during a rewire, but we contain it as much as possible and clean up thoroughly.
There will be some residual fine dust — this is unavoidable when plaster is mixed and applied. A final wipe-down of surfaces with a damp cloth after the team leaves is normal.
Tips for After the Rewire
Let the Plaster Dry
Do not paint new plaster for at least 24 hours. In winter or in poorly ventilated rooms, allow 48 hours. The plaster must be completely dry (uniformly pale in colour) before any paint is applied.
Mist Coat First
New plaster is highly absite and will suck moisture from paint if applied directly. Apply a mist coat first — emulsion paint diluted with 20 to 30 per cent water. This seals the plaster and provides a consistent base for the topcoat.
Check for Shrinkage Cracks
In some cases, plaster applied to deep chases may develop hairline shrinkage cracks as it dries. This is cosmetic, not structural, and is easily filled with a thin layer of decorator's filler before painting. If cracks are more than hairline, contact us and we will re-skim the affected area.
Touch Up or Full Repaint?
- If your walls were recently painted in a standard colour: Touch up the chased areas with the same paint. The repair will be invisible once dry.
- If your walls have aged paint, bold colours, or textured finishes: A full wall repaint may give a better result than touch-up, as colour matching to aged paint is difficult.
- If you were planning to redecorate anyway: A rewire is the perfect time. The walls are freshly plastered and ready for a new colour scheme.
